To the girls of C16:
I knew that I was in for a special year when the first impression of our new home was a Cyclops spray painted on our front door. With very detailed genitalia. But I had no clue what I was truly in for.
I didn’t know that 99% of my days would be spent rolling on the ground, tears rolling down my face from laughing so hard. I didn’t know my heart was capable of feeling this full, or my soul feeling this content and happy.
We endured triple digit degree heat without air conditioning together. We are currently enduring a poorly insulated apartment together in the middle of an icy Michigan winter.
We have made so many memories that bring a smile to my lips now and I know I will be smiling about for the rest of my life.
I don’t think I have taken the time to acknowledge how lucky I am to have found friends like you guys. Who else would blast music with me whether it was 7am or 7pm? And at that, who would belt out the lyrics with me whether it was Gucci or Ed Sheeran?
Thank you for making this year a never ending party. A nonstop dance party. Everything we do, we make it an adventure. Whether it’s loading up the trash into our cars, (because naturally, our apartment complex doesn’t have its own dumpster), getting ready to go out or simply cleaning the kitchen, we make it fun.
Thank you for giving me a ride to class when it is pouring, snowing or freezing outside. And when I take you guys to class, and we all go just for fun, thanks for keeping me company in the car, even though it’s only a five-minute car ride.
I love the fact that no matter where we go, or what we do, it’s a package deal. If people spot one of us, they know the others are nearby. Like we say, “thirty-foot radius always.”
We leave the apartment together and stumble home together. We sprawl out on the kitchen floor, laughing and talking, while T cooks something up at 2am. And the next morning, we sit in the living room, drinking coffee and tea, and laugh and talk for hours about the night before.
Group lib dates, coffee dates, smoothie dates, gym dates and Walmart dates are a regular thing for us. For most people, they would be boring activities, but we make each one an adventure of its own.
I didn’t know it was possible to have friends this great. I didn’t know people like you guys even existed, even though I’ve known some of you for several years now. We always talk about it, too. If we were on the outside looking in on us, we would be so envious of what we didn’t have. I am so blessed to be experiencing college by each of your sides.
Living with others can be a true testament to your friendship, but we have prevailed through it all. Thank you for not yelling at me when my dishes stack up or when my music is too loud in the morning.
Thank you for turning this hole-in-the-wall apartment into a home with me.
Here’s to the memories we have already made and the memories yet to come.
