Ready for a look inside the daily life of a college student? This week I am taking you along with me during a day full of classes, projects and socializing. I’m a junior at Central Michigan University, majoring in Journalism with a concentration in Public Relations and minoring in Event Management. For me, and most other college students, everyday of the week looks different. For this time, I am taking you along on a typical Tuesday!
My first alarm goes off! I’m part of a rare breed that springs out of bed after my first alarm (usually). The first thing I do is brush my teeth, wash my face and start coffee. (College and coffee go together like PB&J).
I sit down at the kitchen table with a gigantic cup of coffee (Seattle’s best Portside Blend and a dash of Great Value French Vanilla Cream!) and open up my News app. As an aspiring PR professional, I need to be constantly checking in with the news and what’s going on with the world. I also receive theSkimm, a daily email that compresses all of the top news stories into an email that takes less than five minutes to “skimm.”
At this point, I start any schoolwork if necessary. On this particular Tuesday, I had two quizzes back to back so I was studying my notes for those.
Time to eat! Basically every morning, I make myself four eggs, two slices of cinnamon toast and a banana (no, I do not make the banana). People always laugh at me, because it’s a pretty big breakfast – but I typically don’t spend a lot of time at my apartment – I will leave shortly after I eat and not return for several hours!
I am all ready to go! My makeup is done, my hair is brushed and pulled partially back and my clothes are on. Today I put on a Central shirt and some workout leggings. It was fifty degrees when I left, but I would later on regret the decision to wear leggings.
Leave for class. Today I left early because I had to print something out at the library on my way. The hall I am usually in is on the opposite end of campus from my apartment and on the top floor of the building, so I usually walk fifteen minutes and take a sec to climb the many flights of stairs.
My first class begins! It’s called “Information Gathering for the Mass Media.”
My first class ends. My next one is in the same exact room, so I usually walk around, use the bathroom and eat a protein bar before returning to the class.
Second class of the day is beginning! This one is called “Introduction to Digital Journalism.” It’s actually my favorite class at the moment.
Classes are done for the day! However, before I stop home, I stop in the hall’s computer lab to update my resume. I need Photoshop to do this, so I use the computers they provide us with. (Hint: In a couple weeks I’ll be posting a blog that will help you with your resume!)
My roommate Elizabeth came and picked me up! We don’t do this for each other all the time, but I have somewhere to be in an hour, so she saved me the long walk. (Thank gosh because when I walked outside I temporarily hated my life – it was eighty degrees and I was wearing leggings. Welcome to Michigan, everyone).
Time to fire up a quick lunch. I eat a small bowl of whole wheat noodles and another banana.
Now, I am leaving to take pictures of my friend for my Digital Photography class (3 hour class on Monday nights…ugh). The plan is to pick him up from class, take him to a public place per the instructions and snap some informal portraits.
After taking the photos and hanging out with my friend for a little bit, I return home to get some things done. Firstly, I start editing the pictures. Then I fold my clothes that have needed to be folded for FOREVER, and start another load of laundry. Finally, I clean up our mess of a kitchen.
I eat a quick Luna bar before heading to the gym.
For anyone who wants to know what I did for my workout, you can see it WOTD.
Leaving the gym, I chat with my Mom, get home (still talking which is why there’s no photo) and make dinner. I made two turkey burgers (no bun, just the meat), cooked some potatoes and made a side of veggies.
I hop in the shower and get ready super quickly – I have another set of photographs to take.
I arrive at my friend Taylor’s apartment to take photos of her roommates. Taylor and I haven’t seen each other since last year so we end up chatting for awhile.
I get home, my roommates and I contemplate going out (Tuesday is a big club night at Central Michigan) and thankfully, decide not to. (My health, my pride and my wallet benefitted). I chat with them for a bit before heading into my room to upload the pictures I took of Taylor and the pictures I took for this post throughout the day.
Some of our best guy friends head over (they’re going out tonight) and hang out for an hour before we drive them to the bar.
My roommate Tianna and I, pick up our friends from the bar. When we get home, I set my alarm for 7:00 a.m. tomorrow and go to sleep.
